Clark’s Guide to

Readable Typography for Blogs

(Or anything, for that matter)

1.         Serif—Easiest to read
2.         Sans Serif—harder to read the smaller it is or the more of it there is
3.           Most body type should be about 12 point in size

4.           Script is hard to read--invitations only

5.           Italic is hard to read

6.

    Only Center Type
on invitations
and titles,
not on body copy

7. ALL CAPS IS HARD TO READ

8.                  REVERSE TYPE
should be at a
Minimum
And bold
And small san serif
is hard to read
As is colored type
on reverse
10.             Screens can make type hard to read

Especially over sans serif

Or heavy and colored screens

11.               Weak colors disappear

12.               Colored type isn’t as effective
As black type, or dark type on a light background

13.      Don’t  Mix Lots of Type Faces

14.            Stick with a few
                  that are compatible

  1. One good thing about the type on my blog: I used a black, serif font on a white background so it is easy to read.
One weakness about the type on my blog: I was afraid it would be boring so I used different fonts for the header, title, etc. The goal was to make it cohesive but it might be overwhelming, I'm not sure.

  2. I wanted my blog to have a bold look however the black background made the font hard to read and the neon lettering also presented readability problems. I redesigned my blog so that I now have a lot of white space with black lettering. I changed my colors to orange and black (red is bold but I like orange better) so that I can still have a bold look but not compromise on readability.

  3. I think the good thing about the type on my blog is that I chose an easy to read font: PT Sans Caption. I'm a huge fan of that font because it is open, clear, and a hair wider than a regular default font (times, arial, etc.) that might make the text look like a big blob.
The bad thing about my type is that I used a darker maroon color for the text so that it matched the color theme for the blog, and I'm not sure if having that color is bad. I didn't want it to be black, but the text may get lost a bit since it all matches.

  4. Usually I prefer Sans serif fonts with normal size, because for me, serif fonts (For instance, Times New Roman) are too popular things to use. In general, serif fonts are set as a basic font and that makes me feel I don't care about the font. However, I don't wanna people to be tired of reading my blog, I'll work on finding appropriate font and size which is readable.

  5. I think the good thing about the type on my blog is that the color scheme is cohesive and i used a serif font so that my posts would be easier to read. I don't see an immediate weakness with my font but i am open to criticism.

  6. My blog is fairly easy to read and navigate. I use two different fonts, a san serif for my titles and dates and a san serif for my body. My weaknesses I would say are the sizing of my font and the colors I use, especially for the reverse type for my dates header. I have since increased the size so the font is more legible, but I have yet to decide on a color that isn't so washed out.

  7. I really want to use black font because I think it will be easier to read since I have a blue background (for now), I am still considering other colors. I also liked the way they shadowed the font but that can get kind of annoying to look at. I am also gonna use a serif font.

  8. I try to keep my blog's text and fonts easy to read and very concise as well to compliment the imagery. Using colors like red demands attention which is why I use it to highlight titles so people instantly know what a post is about. Now my only weakness is that my text doesn't have a voice to it, the fonts are bland and the text could use a bit of sprucing up.

  9. I wanted my blog to have a classic & easy to read feel to it. I chose Ariel simple black font. I feel this font will be easy to read and straight to the point. The weakness of my font will be that it is so simple it will not have a "wow" factor to it.

  10. I think one good thing about my blog is since the background is solid and dark I can have brighter colors for the text which makes it stand out and easy to read. One weakness, is that my font might be a little harder to read because it's kind of slanted, but I wanted it to look creepy.

  11. I used a simple font that is simple to read. At first I had a font that was all caps. I realized quickly that the font was going to be to difficult to read. I tried to pick a easy font that will make my blog post manageable to read.
