National award-winning blog at UCO

Dr. Kurt Hochenauer of the UCO English faculty, writes a blog, OkieFunk, that is an award-winner. His blog has just been recognized as one of the two best political blogs in the state, for the second time, by the Washington Post. Hochenauer's ethics and reputation as a reliable journalist who focuses on issues and not personalities is unquestioned, and is a model of ethics, writing, and content, for anyone who blogs.

Here's the link. Check out his blog, and read it, and respond in the comments below about what you learned about blogging. Due by 5 pm April 2.

  1. I feel like Dr. Hochenauer's blog is a great example to us.

His paragraphs are short and easy on the eyes. He has great links that vary throughout his posts. And Dr. Hochenauer writes with sincere information instead of bias opinion.

  3. What I like most about Dr. Hochenauer's blog is the way he stays on topic. Overall, his theme is politics. Clearly, he's doing well with that. But even down to the posts. They have a good topic, stated in the title, and they concentrate very well on that. I could learn a lot about creating good posts that stick to a theme. I'm probably a little scattered. Good to have a UCO professor making such a big impact in the political blogging world!

  4. Dr. Hochenauer's blog is really a great blog, and a great example for this class. He makes his topic clear from the very beginning, and doesn't stray from it throughout his posts. The paragraphs are short, and he provides the links to the references within the post. Even his blog URL is precise and sticks to the blog. The background is great (which is necessary, even for a political blog), and he isn't using his "political" blog for anything but politics!
Overall, I think it's a great example of how your blog should be used. It should be for a specific purpose, and it shouldn't cross over into other topics unless they're immediately relevant.

  5. I would say the blog is actually pretty impressive. Not so often i find political blogs. I like blogs that concentrate on politics. It is very informational and of course requires the blogger to make a thorough research about a certain topic. I can also learn from the blog that once you start on something, be sure to focus on that topic. Focus is also a key for a good blog.

  6. I think a political blog would be hard to maintain because you always have to be up to date with current issues. Also, you have to have thick skin, because people do not always agree with what you have to say and they will comment mean things. However, I think these blogs are graceful in what they are. Easy to read and the layout is amazing.

  7. After reading the blog, it comes as no surprise as to why it is award winning. He takes political issues which could easily be lost in a sea of jargon and puts it concisely in almost laymen's terms. His posts are compelling and don't single readers out, in the sense that they hold the readers who are not into politic's attention too.

Overall, I really admire his style of writing. Articulate, informative and not overwhelming. I would love to implement these factors into my blogging.

  8. I dont normally follow politics but Dr. Hochenauer's blog is interesting. I love the way he writes because the paragraphs are short and very easy to follow. When reading something that has to be explained thoroughly it best for the writer to keep the readers attention. Also, he was good at staying on the topic throughout each posts.

  9. Normally I do not read or follow political blogs because I get tired of the political jargon and the typical stereotypes that you could usually label anything to do with politics. However, I loved his style of writing and it made me really interested, as well as concerned for the state of our government. The post was compelling and definitely wasn't boring.

  10. I learned that having more interaction can create more followers, I like how he has a poll o n the left hand side of his blog. People love giving their advice and telling others what they think. That is something I havent thought about having on my blog till now. The blog also has a log in option. This is also something that I have yet to see on a blog and think is a great asset to any blog. It would help you keep better track of your followers.
