The "racist" okie legislature?

Seven bills legalizing discrimination against gays? Maybe the authors all belong to SAE?

  1. This blog post is ridiculous and frustrates me. Of course the first chance someone gets to bash Oklahoma and ignorant law makers the whole state is racist! I didn't even read the article because as an Oklahoman I am offended at that broad generalization from some guy with an opinion. I don't hate gays, lesbians, and I am not racists. Really that article just pissed me off.

  4. None of this surprises me. Ever since I can remember our state legislature has been trying to pass some of the most absurd laws that offend peoples rights. I believe it is mostly due to what I refer to as the wasps who have ran our government for a long time now. White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) is an informal, sometimes disparaging term [1] for a group of high-status and influential White Americans of English Protestant ancestry. The term applies to a group believed to control disproportionate social, political, and financial power in the United States.[2] It describes a group whose family wealth, education, status, and elite connections allow them a degree of privilege held by few others.[3]

  5. This article shares the feeling of the few and makes it look like it is the feelings of all Oklahoman s and that just isn't true. In every state you are going to have a few people that are like that, but not everyone in our state feels that way.

  6. The author of the post is spot on in what he is saying. It is almost sad how homophobic this state is. Right after we reached a pivoting point allowing same sex couples to marry, new legislations magically appear that try to limit these same couples as much as possible. Why does it seem like the government only wants to abolish anything against their (arguably) personal beliefs rather than just meet in equality with other states.

  7. This is so frustrating. Once again because of the ignorance of a few loud people a whole group will receive the same brand. I am a Christian and I do not agree with these at all. I don't think we should discriminate in any way, shape, or form.

  8. I think this is a generalization. I don't believe you can say all of Oklahoma's legislature are racist or homophobic. I believe it is important to be aware of this information, but I don't believe you can generalize the entire state.

  9. Although I like to think that most Oklahomans are decent people, I think he is right that this is not the case. Obviously homophobia and racism are still rampant in the state, and legalizing gay marriage isn't going to change that anytime soon. As long as our state representatives hold these discriminating beliefs or support them in legislature, this won't change.

  10. I think its ridiculous to even consider passing things like that. I don't understand why people can't just accept others even if they are a different race, religion, or have a different sexual orientation. I just can't rap my head around why people think that they are better than others because of the color of their skin.

  11. This article is frustrating. If its not one thing its another. These laws make no sense and are ridiculous. Things like this keep giving Oklahoma a bad name and that is not the case. You can not put everyone together as one because many people in this state have very different opinions and views, which do not corrolate with such laws.

  12. Not surprised at all by the Oklahoma legislatures. This type of issue has always been for years but people are acting shocked because its being publicized. Maybe for those who are oblivious to the fact that Oklahoma has these issues, it might be an eye opener. To go on a whim and say the entire state is racist is a little far fetched but I do agree that some of our representatives are, which makes the state look racist.

  13. It's frustrating that people generalize our state legislator into one category. Because as soon as something bad happens, we have an even worse taste in people's mouth. We have had this image of being the 'Bible belt state" and now it is really affecting how people view us. It's also very sad how it's putting a bad image on Christianity. It's not okay to say that "all" law makers are racist and/or homophobic because this isn't true.

  14. I am not from Oklahoma so I don't take pride in this state as many people do but if i was Oklahoman this article would be very frustrating. No matter peoples way of life or what religion they practice they should still be accepted. Isn't that why we live in America. Home of the Free! If everyone stop being so discriminating and started being more loving we would have these problems like the OU crisis.

  15. The Oklahoma Legislature has a history of overly ignorant and just un-defensibly stupid decisions. Honestly the only way I can see change for the state is a changing of the guard in state congress. However that is a more difficult task than most of us here in the city realize. Much of this state is still considered VERY rural america and many towns are at or below the poverty line.
