Official blog of Clark's Blogging for Journalists class, Mass Communication department
Be passionate about your niche.
Pick a blog you know you will be able to talk about a lot and have lots of information on. Doing a healthy/fitness blog ended up being hard because I don't really know too much about it all. So make sure it's something you know you can have a lot of different topics about without hitting writer's block every day
Stay on top of your blog posts. It can be easy to say "Oh I will just blog later" and sometimes that doesn't happen! So just stay on top of it and have fun!
Don't be afraid to be creative and don't wait last minute to blog!
Stay up on your blog posts! You need to blog at least once a week to stay up to date and sometimes twice.
Make sure you are writing for you. Write about what interests you.
STAY ON TOP OF YOUR BLOGGING! Do not let a week go by without posting something!!! The great thing about this class is that you are so independent and have the opportunity to do your own thing, but falling behind on your posts will come and bite you in the rear when the semester comes to a close.
Have a niche. It can be difficult to come up with meaningful post ideas when your blog is just sort of about anything.
Find a passion, write about it, reread, reread, and edit. A lot more goes into a post than you think.
My advice for future students would have to be two things; Come up with an idea for your blog before class so that you can come into the class on a roll already, because once the class starts it moves fast. Also, make sure your topic is something that you really can produce enough content for, it sucks when you don't really know what to post the last few weeks of class.
Just do you. From a personal experience, when I write about what I actually want to write about, I always feel accomplished and delighted at the end. When I have to write from a perspective I don't enjoy, in an attempt to get more viewers, I start to become disgusted and disappointed in my articles.
Push yourself to post. I am the worst about putting blogging off. Once I do make a post though it feels so good to finally get what I wanted to say off my chest. So post post post!
Commit to publishing at least one post per week!
My advice would be to make sure you post weekly right away. It's was easy for me to get caught up with other classes or things I had going on outside of school and not post, because posting was the easiest thing I had to do. Backwards thinking yes, but stay on top of posts.
Blog when you feel inspired. Even if you've already posted for the week. It'll give you cushion to fall back on if your semester gets bogged down.
